Vegan Choices at Diners
Vegan choices at diners are not as tricky to find as we first thought. Here in the Detroit area, there are a lot of diners, or Coney Islands (Coney Islands are diners that have hot dogs, Greek food, and breakfast served all day). Most of these types of restaurants have some sort of veggie pita or veggie wrap on the menu. To make it vegan, you can ask them to leave off the cheese and mayo. Try adding mustard or hummus instead. You will need to ask if the bread choices are vegan or not. Many pita breads and wraps are vegan. Another option is to have a veggie stir fry. Even if the menu lists a stir fry with meat, they can often make a vegan version by not adding the chicken or beef. When Marc orders a veggie stir fry, he also asks them to prepare it with water instead of oil. Most restaurants comply with no problem. Other options at diners include hash browns, bagels, oatmeal, salads, pasta with marinara sauce, hummus and pita bread, and sides of vegetables.
Above is a picture of Kim’s vegan meal at a local diner we love called Greek Pantheon (it is located at 41761 Garfield Road, Clinton Township, MI). She ordered a veggie pita with no cheese and hummus instead of mayo. She also had a side of green beans with tomato sauce and tea with lemon.
*Update: We just found out that the green beans at this restaurant are cooked in chicken broth. So, we won’t order this side dish anymore.
Here is a special wrap Greek Pantheon offers called “Marc’s Special” , in honor of you know who. It is not on the menu, but the cooks keep the recipe posted in the kitchen. It is a yummy combination of tabouleh, hummus and steamed veggies in wrap.
Some diners offer soup that is vegan as well. Sometimes vegetable soups are prepared with a tomato base instead of chicken or beef broth. Greek Pantheon’s cabbage soup, thankfully, is vegan! It is delicious:
Remember, restaurants change products frequently, so ask details about food items to find out if they contain animal products or not. We have found that having a relaxed and friendly attitude always works best. Let us know what you like to order when you eat out.
