Vegan Food at Social Events
Finding vegan food at social events can be a challenge. Last week we went to our cousin’s graduation party, and thankfully, our Aunt Diane went out of her way to make sure the buffet had plenty of vegan options. She had something for everybody and the food was delicious! She prepared a lot of plant-based options including a fresh fruit tray, a veggie tray, a tangy bean salad (with chickpeas!), marinated beets, roasted potato wedges, tossed salad, and a variety of dinner rolls. We ate well!
Here are some tips for being a social vegan, because even though we eat a plant-based diet, we all still want to get out there and enjoy parties with friends and family.
1- If the people hosting the party don’t know, call them ahead of time and let them know you don’t eat animal products. This works better than simply stating that you are vegan, because sometimes people aren’t familiar with the term. We usually say…”We don’t eat animal products, but we don’t expect you to go out of your way to cook for us. How about if we bring a dish, and you go ahead and make whatever you were planning?” Offer to bring a vegan dish that will appeal to all guests (some ideas are pasta salad, veggie chili, and veggie lasagna).
2- If it would not be appropriate to bring a dish (such as a wedding at a hall) eat before you go. Most events will offer a salad and dinner rolls that are vegan, but just in case, have a meal before attending. If the people hosting the party would not be offended or asked to pay more, call the hall or restaurant ahead of time and ask if they can prepare a vegan plate for you.
3- If somebody at a party tries to push you to eat something you don’t want to, it helps to show interest by asking questions about the food. Inquiring about the meal also gives you a chance to show appreciation for the food and for the work that went into preparing it. For instance, say “That looks delicious! Where did you get the recipe?” or “Wow! That does look good. How did you make it?” If that person continues to push, compliment them on the yummy food you already ate and tell them how much you enjoyed it and how full you are.
Fortunately, our friends and family are supportive and go out of their way to make sure we have something to eat at parties. Thank you Aunt Diane and Uncle Jim for inviting us to a great graduation party with so much healthy, yummy food. And congratulations Dana! We are proud of you!
