Vegan Dining in Northern Michigan
We travel to Petoskey, Michigan a few times a year, and have been creating a list with tips for vegan dining in Northern Michigan. In June we visited The Terrace Inn for the first time and absolutely loved it! This hotel reminds us of a cozy version of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. The Terrace Inn is located in Bayview, Michigan, an historic village that was founded in 1875. The inn is nestled in this turn of turn of the century, woodsy residential neighborhood. We enjoyed dinner at the 1911 Restaurant and ate on the terrace on a warm summer evening. The inn is built into a gentle slope, which leaves the terrace dining area up near the treetops.
The customer service from everyone–the hostess, the waitstaff, and the owner–was excellent. The summer menu offered a three course meal. We noticed that several items on the menu were labelled gluten free. When we asked about vegan options our waitress had several suggestions for us. Kim started her meal with the Heirloom Beet Salad (minus the chèvre):
while Marc had the Spinach Salad with balsamic vinegar for the dressing. We both had Israeli couscous primavera which included a medley of grilled veggies in a rich smoked tomato fondue. For the third course, dessert, we both had a fresh fruit cup, but we were also offered brandy or sherry as a substitute.
Our compliments to the executive chef, Zak Ryan! We appreciate chefs who offer scrumptious vegan options that anybody would like.
After dinner we explored the inn, viewed one of the quaint, cozy guest rooms and the elegant dining room. The owner was friendly and accommodating and we can’t wait to go back! We plan to stay overnight this fall.
