Popcorn with Nutritional Yeast
Popcorn sprinkled with nutritional yeast is one of our favorite vegan snacks. We purchased an air popper at a drug store for about $10.00 and it was well worth it! A couple nights a week, especially on nights when we rent a movie, we air-pop popcorn (fat free) and season it with nutritional yeast. You can buy nutritional yeast in the health food section at Kroger and at Vitamin Shoppe locations. We purchased the one pictured here at Kroger:
When we started our plant based diet, we became aware of some food items that we never tried before such as tempeh, seitan, miso, and nutritional yeast. Of all of these, we find ourselves using nutritional yeast most often. It is a flaky or powdery seasoning rich in B vitamins and has a cheesy flavor. You can add it to spaghetti sauce, dips, soups, stews, pasta, salads, rice, pizza, potatoes, and, of course, popcorn. Please realize that nutritional yeast is different from regular yeast you would use when making bread. It is also not the same thing as brewer’s yeast, which is bitter.
If you miss cheese, nutritional yeast can help with cravings. It tastes great and is good for you! Two of our favorite recipes, Pasta with Creamy Vegan White Sauce (click here) and Vegan Parmesan Cheese (click here), include nutritional yeast. Give it a try, get creative with it, and let us know what new ideas you have!
