Vegan Food in New York City
Vegan food in New York City is easy to find and delicious! After we went to Plant-Stock, we spent some time in New York City to visit our lovely niece and her husband. Much to our delight, finding healthy, plant-based food was a breeze. Herbivores like the Bull of Wall Street have no trouble making New York City their home!
As we toured the city, acting like typical midwestern tourists who snapped pictures while gazing up at the skyscrapers, we came across a farmer’s market in Union Square. This Greenmarket is open year round on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm. For more information visit GrowNYC by clicking here. We bought a pint of organic cherry tomatoes and ate them like candy as we browsed our way through the market. Marc found some moist, chocolate vegan muffins to snack on:
We also found some refreshing ice water, slightly sweetened with maple syrup, lavender sachets, and perfectly ripe peaches. We had a lot of fun exploring this market, discovering new produce, taste testing, and meeting the vendors.
We could have spent hours at this market, but there was so much more to see! Next we took the subway to Times Square, visited Rockefeller Center, and ended up at V-Note–a kosher, organic, vegan restaurant on First Avenue between 79th & 80th Streets.
After a day of sight-seeing this cozy bistro was just what we needed. We ordered….
A hearty appetizer– Roasted Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Gnocchi served with sautéed kale and gold beets in a sage, cashew cream sauce:
After much deliberation Chickpea decided on Barbecue Tempeh served with horseradish creme Fraiche, roasted corn salad, potato salad, and avocado for her entree:
Bean asked the waiter which entree had the least amount of fat and oil, so he ordered Zucchini Pappardell, a fresh, raw dish made of zucchini strips, almond butter sauce, avocado, tomatoes, olives, oyster mushrooms, marinated onions, and red peppers:
The service at V-Note was friendly and the food was flavorful and fresh. We are so grateful to our niece and her husband for showing us around the city and helping us find such delicious vegan food!
After our filling meal we headed back to Hotel Wales and prepared to check out early the next morning. We were due in Washington D.C. to start our Food for Life classed with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Hotel Wales is a boutique hotel located in an historic building in the Upper East Side. Our room was a suite with a fireplace and a lovely view. Chickpea loved the details in this hotel such as the ornate woodwork, the black and white tiled bathroom, and the crisp, smooth sheets. Our son and his girlfriend enjoyed the rooftop garden and spaciousness of the suite.
For breakfast we ate at the restaurant connected to our hotel, Sarabeth’s. Chickpea ordered steel cut oats with chia seeds, blackberries, and pomegranate molasses. She also had coffee with soy milk:
Bean had the Morning Crunch, which included roasted granola, strawberries, raisins, bananas, and soy milk.
Hotel Wales is an elegant hotel with vegan friendly restaurants nearby and a market with plenty of fresh produce right next door. The concierge, valet, and bell hops were extremely helpful and friendly. Hotel Wales is perfectly located for business or pleasure, as it is located near Mount Sinai Hospital, NY Academy of Medicine, Parsons- The New School of Design, Hunter College, many small businesses, Central Park, and museums. Next time we visit New York City we will stay at Hotel Wales again. Please visit their website for more information by clicking here.
As we drove out of New York City, we were sad to say good-bye to our niece and her husband. We hope to visit them again soon along with our daughter, Marissa, who could not come this time because she was busy getting her classroom together for the new school year. We noticed a lot of vegan businesses we will check out next time, including Pure Food:
Thank you to our son’s girlfriend, Kelly, for snapping this picture as we drove out of town. We are so grateful for our safe, healthy, happy trip to New York City!
